The Minnesota Ice Race & Learning about Ice Racing

The Minnesota Ice Race (Craziest Race I’ve Ever Swam)
Recently, I competed in my first ever ice race in Lake Johanna, Minnesota.
It was crazy.
The organisers moved 75,000 pounds of ice to construct this 2-lane, 25 meter frozen lake swimming pool. People from all over the world came to swim in this special place.
The water temperature was just above freezing at 34°F (1°C)… it was not warm!

They cut this 25 meter swimming pool into the lake!
After my first 25 meter race, I spent too much time out of the water and my feet went completely numb! But after my second race I got in the sauna right away and I warmed up within just a couple minutes.
They have very strict safety precautions. Lifeguards, medical experts. They're checking you out constantly, making sure you're warming up. It was great piece of mind.
The fun part about this event is you had athletes from all walks of life.
You had high level swimmers, like myself, as well as people that are just casual recreational swimmers who just wanted to see if they could do a 25. That's what made it so much fun.
They're already planning for next year. It's going to be bigger and better than ever.
I was able to attend this amazing event because one of the organizers reached out asked if I wanted to race as part of Project 50. Shoutout to Nick Tamble!
If you have a race or an event, or you'd like to book a swim clinic with me sometime this year, send me an email to [email protected].
Who knows, maybe I’ll be racing in your state sometime this year.

The Rise of Ice Swimming - A New Olympic Event??
Ice swimming is becoming a very popular sport. In fact, we're trying to make it a Winter Olympic event.
The rules are slightly different than pool swimming:
· There's no diving.
· There's no underwater kicking (Not past 5 meters)
· There's no flip turns.
There are world records, there’s a league - it’s a whole thing. You can check it out at InternationalIceSwimming.com
How do you get into ice racing? Well, you start with cold water dipping, and then maybe you can work towards the staple event - the 1KM.
But the question is:
Are you brave enough?
